Should an AI agent propose, decide or execute? The question is not new: research on levels of automation offers a proven decision grid.

A scale of delegation

Raja Parasuraman, Thomas Sheridan and Christopher Wickens (2000, IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics) proposed a ten-level scale, from minimal assistance to full autonomy, applied to four functions: acquiring information, analysing it, deciding, acting. Parasuraman, Sheridan & Wickens, 2000

The right level depends on consequences

The authors stress that the relevant level varies with task criticality: the costlier or more irreversible an error, the more decision and action must remain under direct human control. Full automation is justified mainly on reversible, well-bounded tasks.

What this changes for a no-code agent

An assistant configured by a non-technical employee inherits the same trade-offs. Scoping an agent's mission means explicitly choosing its level on each function: search and summarise, yes; validate and send, not necessarily. (our executive and employee training programmes)

The limit of enthusiastic prototypes

A prototype that 'works' in a demo has not yet met edge cases. Without a test phase on hard examples — missing information, ambiguous instructions — deployment turns users into involuntary testers.

A practical check in {CITY}

In a team entre PME bilingues, agroalimentaire et services publics, describe the first agent on a one-page brief: mission, authorised sources, autonomy level per function, the person who validates before anything is sent. Then test on ten real cases, three of them deliberately hard, before any go-live. A AI training in Fribourg structures this no-code scoping.
